About the Item

These two porcelain plaques have been expertly painted to show portraits of a young girl and a young boy, and are set within circular brass frames. The girl wears a light blue coat and a white shirt, with a maroon-coloured collar, and beaded necklace. She wears her black hair down, and has a light blue and red cap on her head, embroidered with a cross with flared ends. The boy wears a white-lined, deep purple overcoat, a gold bodice, high-necked white shirt and four pearl necklaces. He dons a large, floppy black hat with a large white feather on his head. Both portraits are set against a dark grey ground. Each porcelain plaque is set within a brass frame, which is highly decorated with beading, strapwork, and cornucopias, filled with ripe fruit. The warmth and brightness of these circular frames beautifully contrasts with the dark ground the images are placed against. These portrait plaques exemplify the fine quality of artistic output from Austria in the 19th Century. They can be stood up on stands and placed within display cabinets or on a mantelpiece, or alternatively can be hung as wall art.

The plaques depict two women, both with wavy blonde shoulder-length hair, and similar facial features. The women may be sisters, possibly even twins. One woman wears a pale pink dress...
