About the Item

Highly atmospheric and full of mystery, this 1930 painting by muralist Carl Brandien depicts a procession of Balinese figures walking down the heart of a valley that is framed by palm trees and cliffs veined with waterfalls. The nocturnal scene is softly lit by the moon above, and the dark colors contrast with the bright pinks and oranges of the clothing by the Balinese people. Brandein was a kind of Renaissance Man, executing illustrations for periodicals of the day, painting murals, and executing a series of easel paintings that depicted the exotic lands he visited. He and his wife embarked on what they called a "Vagabondage" or "quest of life," their goal to "discover and paint beauty in all corners of the world." In 1930 alone, the year this was painted, in addition to Bali he traveled to Japan, Hawaii, Singapore, Vietnam and Ceylon. The painting is signed, dated and titled, and is set in a faux bamboo frame. Dimensions include linen-wrapped liner and frame; visible painting is 11.25 inches high by 15 inches wide.
