About the Item

A tall, upright académie in watercolor over pencil: a standing male model, arms raised and crossed above the head, set against a muted green ground that throws the warm flesh tones forward. The drawing survives beneath the wash at the hands and feet — the frank, unhurried record of a life-class session rather than a composed exhibition piece — and it is this directness that gives the sheet its presence. The handling is economical and assured, the modelling built in transparent layers. Signed lower right "S. Marret-Cleyet" and dated 5 March 1932. Simone Marret-Cleyet (1915–2024) was a French artist born in Hanoi, then French Tonkin, the daughter of an officer of the colonial administration — a background that ran through her subjects. She is known today above all for the work she made in French Equatorial Africa, among it Jeune fille nue, signed at Brazzaville in 1936, which passed through Christie's, London. This standing académie, dated 5 March 1932, was painted when she was just seventeen — an assured early life-study made four years before the Brazzaville period, and a rare survival on paper from a hand better known through oils. Presented in its period dark green–painted wood frame, the narrow vertical format is unusually easy to place — a quiet single hang, or a strong vertical note within a grouped wall. In good vintage condition. There is a trace of past humidity/water damage to the upper-left corner. A few minor spots inherent to the painting process are also visible on the sheet; these are part of the work's making, not later damage. The colors remain notably strong and fresh, with no apparent fading. Held in its period dark green–painted wood frame, which carries honest wear and losses to the moulding in keeping with the period. Framed dimensions: 56.5 × 24.5 × 1.75 cm (22.25 × 9.65 × 0.69 in). Weight: 1,005 g (2.2 lb).
