About the Item

Two little girls in the wood are surprise by a reindeer hidden in the greenery. This painting was acquired in Munich on 1878 by an American collector and later on was auction by Christie’s Auction House as is marked in the back of the painting. The painting is signed S.Martin. It is representative of the Munich school of the 19th century that wanted to highlight the realism in the arts as opposed to the Romanticism movement. The Munich school is re-known by the naturalistic style and dark chiaroscuro. This painting is highlighted by a beautiful heavy carved and giltwood and gesso overlapped laurel leaves frame.
