Awash with swirling colors and abstract forms, the mixed-media paintings of emerging artist Issy Wilson reflect the interconnectedness of the natural world. A collaboration between the artist, the materials and their environment, Wilson’s practice investigates ecological processes through material agency. In the ecosystem that is her studio, Wilson’s paintings grow and evolve in relation to one another, like a rhizomatic network with continuous feedback and non-linear growth. Canvases are ‘watered’ with ink and earth pigments, then dried and reworked. Fabrics and papers are layered and peeled away, revealing topographical impressions beneath. These gradual transformations are traceable in the final compositions, each a tangible record of process and time. The layered composition of this large-scale work entitled “Vestigial Structures” was built up slowly over the course of a year, gradually developing depth and form. The earliest impressions were the result of ink and pigment run-off from other paintings, marking the canvas with unexpected shapes and ghostly framing. Like the buried foundations of torn-down buildings, the impressions left by previous works became architectural elements on the canvas, vestigial traces that document change yet shape the composition. Inky shades of black and brown add organic contrast to angular lines, combining to form an abstract landscape with faint reflections of the past.
