About the Item

Photos of the Transatlantic REX depicting the Lido and the first-class swimming pool overlooking the city of Genoa. Taken on November 24, 1932, by the studio Cav. John Agosto of Genoa on behalf of ITALIA Flotte Riunite. Good condition, small signs of wear. Measures 29.5 x 23 cm - 11.6 x 9 in. The ocean liner REX was the milestone ship that triggered the excellence of Italian shipbuilding in the world that endures today, 268.20 meters long, launched on August 1, 1931 in Sestri Ponente (Genoa) by Ansaldo Shipyards, now Fincantieri, which built it in just 15 months. It was a pioneering ship, both for its futuristic design with a double keel and double hull, the first Italian bulbous bow, equipped with a 145,000-hp engine that allowed journeys at 30 knots, and for its luxurious and comfortable furnishings in the 3 classes on 12 decks, air-conditioned and ozonated. Its 2,032 passengers lived a dream on each Atlantic crossing on the Sun Route, farther south than its competitors in the Atlantic, enjoying 2 large swimming pools on the decks and advanced gymnastic facilities, as well as impeccable hotel and restaurant service, daily and evening events with onboard orchestras. It was an ocean liner that traveled as fast as a speedboat in the utmost comfort, recalled by Fellini in the film Amarcord and on which the greatest personalities of the period traveled. It is the only Italian ship to have entered world seafaring history for winning the Blue Ribbon on August 16, 1933 in the fastest Atlantic crossing in 4 days 13 hours 58. Little-known facts of its history include the rescue of 20,000 to 50,000 European Jews in 1932-1940 with reception on board with a kosher rabbi and cook, on March 6, 2024 the entire crew of the REX has been included in the Garden of the Righteous.
