Cole Porter Posing in his Beverly Hills Home, 1954 by Legendary Bob Willoughby. Marked on back: Private Copy Not For Reproduction. Bob Willoughby was born in Los Angeles, Ca. in 1927. After photographing jazz musicians in the late 1940s and early 1950s, found fame by taking photographs on a myriad of Hollywood films. His iconic photographs of Hollywood s early stars – both on and off set – took the world by storm and he was often on secondment for as many as seven different publications for any one film. Willoughby s big break came in 1954 when he photographed Judy Garland as he filmed the final scene of A Star Is Born. This portrait became his first cover for Life magazine. He went on to work on nearly a hundred films, including My Fair Lady, Who s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?, The Graduate and Rosemary s Baby. With an archive that includes Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Fonda, Ann Bancroft and Judy Garland, Willoughby s work is in the permanent collection of many national and photography galleries. A close relationship with many of his subjects gave Willoughby an insight that eludes most other photographers and it is precisely this added dimension that prompted Proud Galleries to host Sinatra – An Intimate Collection in 2002, The Audrey Collection in 2011 and The Silver Age of Hollywood in 2012. Willoughby sadly passed away in December 2009. For many years he was the one of the most prominent still cameramen in the international film industry, largely due to his unobtrusive style and aesthetic sensibility. Critic Charles Champlin once described Willoughby s work as transcending photojournalism to become salon art. His photographs can be found in the collections of The National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C., The National Portrait Gallery, London. The National Museum of Photography, Bradford, UK.
