About the Item

Two Gelatin Silver Prints of India by Johnston & Hoffmann, one with blind stamp depicting bathers at the Hoogly, the other of a backlit wooden boat on the Ganges. Both prints have penciled inventory numbers, size, and photographer's name on the reverse. Hindus revere the Ganges as a river descended from the heavens. Bathing in the Ganges River is a deeply sacred ritual in Hinduism, believed to purify the body and soul and cleanse one from sins. Founded in 1882 by PA Johnston and Theodore Julius Hoffmann, (Johnston & Hoffmann) was the first and largest studio based in Calcutta (now Kolkata), with later branches being opened in Darjeeling, Shimla, Rangoon and Burma.
