About the Item

An original Italian film poster for Prima e Dopo l'Amore... Un Grido d'Allarme ("Before and After Love... A Cry of Alarm"), issued in 1971 to promote the Italian drama directed by Renzo Renzi. A striking example of early 1970s Italian cinema advertising, the poster combines bold graphic design with the provocative visual language that characterised the country's film posters during the period. The composition is dominated by an expressive illustration of a blonde female figure rendered in a highly stylised painterly manner, set against a clean background incorporating the universal male and female symbols. The dramatic imagery is paired with vibrant typography in shades of blue and red, creating an eye-catching design that perfectly reflects the changing attitudes towards sexuality and social commentary that defined much of Italian cinema during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Produced for the film's original theatrical release in 1971, the poster bears the title Prima e Dopo l'Amore... Un Grido d'Allarme together with the principal cast, including Farley Granger, Franco Interlenghi, Loredana Mongardini, Leonora Vivaldi, and Edoardo Salerno, and credits the production company La C.R. Cinematografica. Printed for cinema distribution, it represents an authentic piece of Italian film history rather than a later reproduction. Italian film posters from this period are widely regarded as some of the most imaginative examples of twentieth-century graphic design. Unlike many contemporary posters produced elsewhere, Italian publishers frequently commissioned accomplished illustrators to create bespoke artwork that captured the mood and themes of a film through dramatic compositions and bold colour palettes. As a result, original examples have become increasingly sought after by collectors of cinema memorabilia, graphic design, and vintage advertising. Presented in a frame, the poster offers both historical interest and considerable decorative appeal, making it equally suitable for collectors of original film posters and interiors seeking an authentic piece of twentieth-century Italian graphic art. Vintage 20th Century Italian Campari "Lo Spiritello" Advertising Poster c.1970

Vintage 20th Century Italian Campari "Lo Spiritello" Advertising Poster c.1970

Located in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent

A striking Italian offset lithographic advertising poster for Campari, produced during the 1970s after Leonetto Cappiello's celebrated Lo Spiritello design of 1921. One of the most recognisable images in the history of advertising, Cappiello's exuberant composition has become synonymous with both the Campari brand and the golden age of European poster art. The design depicts the mischievous figure known as Lo Spiritello ("The Little Spirit"), dressed in a vivid red polka-dot costume and balancing a bottle of Campari while emerging from a dramatic curling orange peel. Set against a deep black background, the brilliant colours and simplified forms create an unforgettable visual impact, perfectly illustrating Cappiello's revolutionary approach to commercial advertising. The bold green Campari lettering anchors the composition, while the playful figure embodies the lively, sophisticated spirit that the company sought to associate with its famous aperitif. Originally created in 1921, Lo Spiritello is widely regarded as one of Leonetto Cappiello's greatest masterpieces. Often described as the father of modern advertising, Cappiello abandoned the highly decorative Art Nouveau style in favour of bold, simplified imagery set against dark backgrounds, producing posters that were instantly recognisable from a distance. His work transformed commercial poster design and remains among the most influential graphic art of the twentieth century. This example is a licensed Italian offset lithographic reprint produced during the 1970s by Officine Grafiche Ricordi, Milan, one of Italy's most prestigious printing houses. The printer's credit appears along the lower margin and is consistent with authorised mid-century reproductions issued for decorative display, allowing a new generation to enjoy Cappiello's iconic imagery while preserving the integrity of the original design. Today, Cappiello's Campari posters...
