About the Item

Monumental color lithographic advertising poster after the celebrated 1905 design by Leonetto Cappiello (Italian/French, 1875–1942) for Menthe-Pastille, the French mint liqueur produced by E. Giffard in Angers, France. The dramatic composition depicts Cappiello's distinctive red devil-like figure perched atop a tall pedestal and drinking from a glass through an extraordinarily long straw. The brilliant red figure emerges against a dense background of deep green and cobalt-blue foliage, while oversized yellow MENTHE-PASTILLE lettering dominates the lower portion of the composition. The lower margin bears the printed inscription "IMP. P. VERCASSON & Cie., 43, Rue de Lancry, PARIS" together with "REPRODUCTION INTERDITE." Additional printer markings associated with P. Vercasson are visible within the image. The composition is documented as a 1905 design by Leonetto Cappiello. The original-format poster is recorded at approximately 200 × 129 cm (78.7 × 50.7 inches), making the dimensions of this example consistent with the monumental format of the period. This example has not been professionally authenticated; accordingly, it is offered as a lithographic poster after Cappiello's documented 1905 Menthe-Pastille design. Prospective buyers are encouraged to review the photographs and conduct any additional research or authentication they deem appropriate. Presented under glass in a substantial ribbed silver-tone frame. The impressive scale, saturated palette and iconic Cappiello imagery make the work a commanding example of early 20th-century French advertising design.
