Original Japanese film poster for the 1953 drama directed by Yasujiro Ozy. The film starred Chishu Ryu and Chieko Higashiyama. One of Japan’s most celebrated and prolific directors, Yasujiro Ozu directed fifty-four films over the course of his life. Ozu cultivated an unmistakable aesthetic with the help of several long-term collaborators, including the scriptwriter Kogo Nada. Director and writer shared a vision, and are said to have developed ideas for their films together over glasses of sake, in the dead of night. The resulting films are as intimate as the process of conceiving them. Ozu was primarily interested in the shomin-geki tradition of storytelling, in which the focus lies on the lives of ordinary people and families. Many critics consider Tokyo Story...

Strangers on a Train c1950s Japanese 2 Sheet Film Poster

A superb original Japanese Tatekan (2 sheet) film poster for Strangers on a Train, issued for a c1950s Japanese release of Alfred Hitchcock's celebrated thriller. The tall, narrow format gives the design real drama, with Hitchcock's portrait, a glowing railway signal and bold vertical Japanese lettering creating a tense and highly atmospheric composition. It is a wonderful alternative to the more familiar Western campaign artwork and a striking example of Japanese film poster design. Released in 1951, Strangers on a Train is one of Hitchcock's great suspense films, adapted from the novel by Patricia Highsmith...

Fab, original first-year-of-release Goldfinger poster. This original 1964 Japanese poster for Goldfinger is a superb example of Bond at his boldest. Packed with dramatic imagery, vivid colour and striking Japanese typography, it captures all the glamour, danger and sheer cinematic punch of one of the greatest 007 films ever made. Directed by Guy Hamilton, Goldfinger is widely regarded as the film that defined the James Bond formula. With Sean Connery in peak form as 007, the film delivered the perfect mix of action, wit, style and spectacle, helping to cement Bond as a global phenomenon. Connery’s cool authority, charm and effortless screen presence made him the definitive James Bond for many, and Goldfinger remains one of the finest showcases of his performance in the role. Japanese posters from this period are especially prized for their dynamic layouts and distinctive graphic energy, often giving familiar Hollywood titles a fresh and highly collectible visual identity. This example does exactly that, combining studio stills, bold design and brilliant colour to create a poster with real wall power. The artist for this poster is not clearly credited, which only adds to the intrigue often found with vintage Japanese film material from the era. Rare, eye-catching and instantly recognisable, this original Japanese Goldfinger...
