18th Century Engraving of Ornate French Cannons from Diderot’s Encyclopédie, circa 1770 This exceptional 18th-century engraving, titled Fonte des Canons, originates from Denis Diderot’s Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, one of the most ambitious intellectual projects of the Enlightenment. Published between 1751 and 1772, the Encyclopédie sought to document and disseminate knowledge across a wide range of fields, including metallurgy, military technology, and industrial processes. This engraving, likely published around 1770 to 1772, provides a meticulously detailed representation of five cannon designs of different calibers, used in French military and naval operations. The engraving showcases the elaborate decorative elements of 18th-century cannon designs, reflecting both the artistic craftsmanship and the engineering precision of the period. Each cannon is labeled with a different caliber, including XXIV, XVI, XII, VIII, and IV, corresponding to the weight of the cannonballs they fired.
