Antique Botanical Lithograph, Billbergia Thyrsoidea, de Vriese 1856 Description: A bold and visually striking mid-19th century botanical chromolithograph depicting Billbergia thyrsoidea, a tropical bromeliad species rendered with exceptional clarity and decorative presence. This plate originates from the important Dutch horticultural publication Tuinbouw-Flora van Nederland en zijne overzeesche bezittingen, issued in 1856 under the direction of botanist Willem Hendrik de Vriese. The composition is dominated by a dramatic central flowering spike in deep red tones, rising from a dense rosette of broad, arching leaves. The foliage is beautifully modeled in layered greens with subtle variegation and natural curvature, giving the plant a sculptural, almost architectural presence. Surrounding the main subject are smaller botanical studies, including floral sections and structural details, reflecting the scientific rigor of the publication. Lithographed by Woldfart and printed by Lemercier in Paris, this chromolithograph exemplifies the high level of craftsmanship achieved in 19th-century European botanical illustration. The combination of strong form, rich color contrasts, and precise detail makes this piece both scientifically valuable and highly decorative.
