About the Item

Antique engraving of Quante-Cong, Emperor of the Chinese, Warren sc., c.1780–1800 This antique engraving presents a European interpretation of the grandeur of the Chinese emperor, here titled “Quante-Cong – Emperor of the Chinese, Whose Magnificence Surpasses that of the Most Celebrated European Monarchs.” Rather than being an accurate likeness, the image reflects the fascination and imagination of late 18th-century Europe regarding the distant and exotic court of China. The composition shows the emperor enthroned in a richly decorated interior, wearing elaborate robes and an ornate crown. An attendant stands behind him, holding a large feathered fan, while the emperor gestures with authority. The surroundings are filled with chinoiserie details, including calligraphic panels, lacquered-style furniture, and decorative motifs. To the left, a large vase with a flowering plant and a small stool sit by a candle-lit table, which holds papers and scrolls. The open doorway reveals a glimpse of distant architecture and mountains, adding a sense of depth and exotic setting. The engraving was executed by Warren (“Warren sculp.”), a skilled engraver active in London during the late 18th century. It was likely published by Alexander Hogg or another contemporary publisher specializing in large illustrated compendiums of history, geography, and world monarchs. These works catered to a wide readership, eager to learn about foreign cultures through images and descriptions. While the portrayal is more imaginative than factual, it captures the European vision of China as a land of immense wealth, ritual, and magnificence.
