About the Item

Antique Lithograph of Italian Faience Dish, d’Azeglio Collection, Delange, 1869 Large-format antique lithograph depicting a richly painted Italian faience dish (plat), once in the collection of the Marquis d’Azeglio in London. The dish is decorated with a vivid biblical or devotional scene, showing two kneeling monks in prayer, one gazing heavenward as rays of divine light descend from the sky. In the background, a Renaissance castle and mountainous landscape create a dramatic setting. The piece is further inscribed with the name 'Oratio Fontana', a celebrated maiolica painter of Urbino, active in the late 16th century and renowned for his narrative figural scenes on tin-glazed pottery. This lithograph originates from Henri Delange’s *Recueil de Faïences Italiennes des XVe, XVIe et XVIIe Siècles* (Paris, 1869), one of the most sumptuous 19th-century catalogues dedicated to Renaissance and Baroque Italian faience. The work documented masterpieces from leading European collections, including those attributed to great Urbino workshops such as Fontana. These painted plates, admired for their color, complexity, and storytelling, exemplify the fusion of art and utility in Renaissance ceramics. Condition: Very good, with some mild toning and faint foxing in the margins. Plate mark visible. Strong, vibrant colors preserved. Please study the image carefully. Framing tips: The scalloped edge design and strong narrative imagery of this lithograph can be beautifully emphasized with a wide cream or ivory mat. A gilt frame will draw out the golden tones, while a darker frame will contrast effectively with the bright palette. For added refinement, a double mat with a thin blue inner line can echo the landscape tones and enhance the visual depth. Technique: Color lithograph Maker: Henri Delange, Paris, 1869
