About the Item

Antique Racehorse Training Scene, Hullmandel Sporting Lithograph c.1840 A fascinating nineteenth-century sporting lithograph depicting a racehorse undergoing examination and handling by stable staff. Unlike the more formal equine portraits of the period, this composition offers a rare glimpse into the practical world of horse training, veterinary inspection, and race preparation. The horse is shown restrained by attendants while one groom carefully lifts a foreleg, creating an engaging scene that captures both the physical power of the animal and the expertise required to manage valuable bloodstock. The print is titled "Racer (Name Unknown)", suggesting that the identity of the horse had either been lost or was unknown at the time of publication. Despite the absence of a recorded name, the horse was evidently considered significant enough to be included within a series devoted to notable sporting and racing subjects. The image therefore serves not only as an attractive work of equestrian art but also as a documentary record of nineteenth-century racing culture. The print was drawn by H.B. Chalon and printed by the celebrated London lithographer Charles Hullmandel. Chalon was among Britain's leading animal painters and sporting artists, admired for his exceptional understanding of equine anatomy and movement. Hullmandel's workshop was one of the most important lithographic establishments of the nineteenth century and produced many of the finest sporting prints of the Victorian era. Particularly appealing is the unusual composition, which differs from traditional static horse portraits. The interaction between horse and handlers introduces a narrative element seldom encountered in sporting prints of the period. The horse's alert expression, tense posture, and powerful musculature create a sense of immediacy and realism, while the sparse background ensures the viewer's attention remains focused on the subject. Such prints were highly prized by horse owners, breeders, trainers, and sporting enthusiasts during the nineteenth century. Today they remain desirable among collectors of equestrian art, racing memorabilia, and sporting prints, particularly when they depict authentic aspects of stable and racing life. This offering is for an original nineteenth-century lithograph, not a modern reproduction. Any framed room visualizations are intended solely to illustrate potential display options and may not accurately represent the print's exact scale relative to the frame or interior setting. Condition: Age-related toning and occasional foxing. Minor creasing, handling marks, and edge wear consistent with age. Small marginal imperfections and signs of former binding are present. The image remains strong, clear, and visually appealing. Please study the photographs carefully. Framing tips: This print displays beautifully in a dark walnut, ebonized, or traditional mahogany frame with a warm ivory mat. A narrow gilt liner can add refinement while complementing the rich tonal qualities of the lithograph. Particularly suitable for libraries, studies, country houses, racing collections, and equestrian interiors. Technique: Lithograph Maker: H.B. Chalon, England; printed by Charles Hullmandel, London, circa 1840.
