About the Item

Arachnids & Insects Print: Spiders, Scorpion, Centipedes, Flies – Antique 1867 This detailed antique print depicts a wide range of arachnids, insects, and myriapods, including spiders, scorpions, flies, centipedes, lice, and mites, rendered in fine hand-coloured engravings. It originates from the Atlas der Natuurlijke Geschiedenis voor scholen en huisgezinnen, adapted into Dutch by T.C. Winkler after Traugott Bromme, and published in Amsterdam by J.C. Loman in 1867. Created for educational use, this plate introduced 19th-century students to arthropod diversity and anatomical classification. The labelled figures include: 1. Crane fly (Tipulidae species) 1a. House spider (Tegenaria domestica) 1b. Cellar spider (Pholcus phalangioides) 2. Crane fly (Tipulidae species) 3. Hoverfly (Syrphidae species) 4. Robber fly (Asilidae species) 5. Bee fly (Bombyliidae species) 6. Horsefly (Tabanidae species) 7. Moth fly (Psychodidae species) 8. Whip scorpion (Thelyphonida species) 9. Blowfly (Calliphoridae species) 10. Flesh fly (Sarcophagidae species) 11. Ant (Formicidae species) 12. Silverfish (Lepisma saccharina) 13. Harvestman (Opiliones species) 14. Booklouse (Psocoptera species) 15. Flea (Siphonaptera species) 16. Millipede (Diplopoda species) 17. Centipede (Chilopoda species) 18. Scorpion (Scorpiones species) 19. Tarantula (Theraphosidae species) 20. Wolf spider (Lycosidae species) 21. Orb-weaver spider (Araneidae species) 22. Green huntsman spider (Micrommata virescens) 23. Tick (Ixodida species) 24. Daddy longlegs spider (Pholcidae species) 25. Whip scorpion or vinegaroon (Uropygi species) 26. Louse (Anoplura species) Produced using copper engraving with meticulous hand colouring, the print shows fine anatomical lines, body segmentation, and detailed leg structures. Each specimen is depicted systematically for comparative study, reflecting the precision of 19th-century natural history illustration before photographic field guides existed. Condition summary: Good condition for its age, with slight overall toning and minor scattered foxing mainly in the margins. The paper remains strong with no tears or repairs, and the hand colouring is vivid and well-preserved. Framing tips: Frame this entomological and arachnological print in a black, dark wood, or walnut frame with a cream or off-white mount to enhance its detailed engraving and earthy tones. For traditional settings, a gold frame adds antique warmth and academic elegance. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the colours and prevent further toning. This antique natural history print will enrich any insect or spider art collection, educational interior, or natural history gallery wall with timeless scientific beauty and decorative intrigue.
