Battle of Saint-Quentin 1914 – WWI German Illustrated War Print, Color Lithograph This vivid color lithograph depicts the Battle of Saint-Quentin on 27 August 1914, one of the early and fiercely contested engagements of the opening phase of World War I. Issued in 1914 as part of a contemporary German illustrated war series, the print presents the conflict as it was visually reported to the public at the time, rather than as a later historical interpretation. The composition is dense with action: advancing German infantry confront British troops in close combat, with smoke, explosions, and fallen soldiers spread across a rolling landscape. The strong contrast between uniforms, animated gestures, and bursts of artillery fire creates a powerful sense of immediacy. The expressive drawing style and rich color palette give the scene both dramatic force and strong decorative appeal. The sheet was printed on thin, lightly toned paper, typical of early 20th-century illustrated war and news publications. Translation of the original German title and caption (printed below the image): “The Battle of Saint-Quentin on 27 August 1914. (Major defeat of the English.) The English army, which had joined three French territorial divisions, was completely defeated by the Germans on 27 August 1914 north of Saint-Quentin. Several thousand prisoners, seven field batteries, and one heavy battery fell into German hands. That the expeditionary corps, the best troops of Great Britain, should find itself in full retreat after being completely beaten came as a surprise to the widest expectations.” Condition report: Printed on thin paper as issued. Light overall age toning consistent with the paper type. Minor edge wear, small creases, and handling marks visible mainly at the margins. No major tears, losses, or repairs observed. Overall in good, honest condition for a wartime illustrated print on fragile paper stock. Framing suggestions: A dark wood or black frame with an off-white or light grey mat enhances the strong colors and line work while keeping the presentation restrained and elegant.
