About the Item

Bembine Tablet of Isis Engraving from Montfaucon Antiquity Explained, 1721 Description: A striking and historically important engraving depicting the celebrated Bembine Tablet of Isis (Mensa Isiaca), reproduced in rich detail from Bernard de Montfaucon’s monumental work Antiquity Explained and Represented in Sculptures, published in London in 1721. This impressive composition presents the enigmatic tablet in its entirety, filled with Egyptianizing figures, deities, ritual scenes, and ornamental hieroglyphs arranged within an elaborate architectural framework. The Bembine Tablet, though long believed to be an authentic relic of ancient Egypt, is now understood to be a Roman creation from the 1st century AD, executed in an Egyptianizing style that reflects the fascination with Egyptian religion in the classical world. During the 17th and early 18th centuries, it became one of the most studied antiquities in Europe, playing a central role in early interpretations of Egyptian symbolism. Bernard de Montfaucon (1655–1741), the renowned French scholar and one of the founders of modern archaeology and art history, included this subject in his encyclopedic publication. His *Antiquity Explained* is considered one of the most influential antiquarian works of the Enlightenment, systematically documenting classical and Near Eastern artifacts. Engravings from this work are highly regarded for their scholarly importance as well as their decorative appeal. The plate is densely composed, featuring numerous figures interpreted as Egyptian deities, including a central shrine-like structure often associated with Isis. Although the hieroglyphs are now recognized as pseudo-hieroglyphs, they contributed significantly to the European imagination of ancient Egypt and influenced generations of artists, scholars, and collectors. With its large horizontal format and intricate detail, this engraving functions both as an early scholarly illustration and as a visually compelling decorative piece. Works from Montfaucon’s publication are particularly sought after by collectors of antiquarian prints, early archaeology, and Egyptology. This is an original antique engraving, not a reproduction. All items we offer are authentic period works of art over 100 years old. The prints are sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and interior inspiration only and may not always be to scale. Condition: Good condition, with age-related toning and visible fold lines from original binding, as typical for large folio plates. Minor spotting and light surface wear. Margins intact with no major tears. Plate impression visible. Framing tips: This engraving is ideally suited for a museum-style presentation in a dark walnut or ebonized frame with a wide ivory mount. The strong horizontal composition makes it an excellent statement piece above a desk, console, or in a study or library, particularly when paired with other antiquarian or Egyptological works.
