About the Item

Black Rock New York Harbor Lighthouse – Antique Steel Engraving c.1850 This dramatic mid-19th century steel engraving depicts the harbor entrance at Black Rock, New York, once an important maritime settlement along the Niagara River near Buffalo. The print was published in the celebrated illustrated geographical series Meyers Universum by the Bibliographisches Institut in Germany during the mid-1800s. These engravings were created to introduce European audiences to important American cities, ports, landscapes, and engineering works during a period of rapid development across the United States. The composition shows the powerful meeting of water, wind, and navigation along the shores of Lake Erie and the Niagara River. In the foreground, small boats struggle against heavy waves as sailors attempt to control their vessels in the rough waters. A group of men cling to a small craft while waves crash around them, creating a dramatic maritime scene typical of 19th-century coastal engravings. Dominating the right side of the composition stands the tall lighthouse at Black Rock, rising from the stone fortifications that once protected the harbor. The lighthouse served as a crucial navigational aid for ships entering the busy waters between Lake Erie and the Niagara River. During the early and mid-19th century, this region was a major gateway for commercial shipping between the Great Lakes and the interior of North America. Several sailing ships appear in the background navigating the turbulent harbor. These vessels represent the busy commercial activity that developed after the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, which connected the Great Lakes with the Hudson River and New York City. The canal dramatically increased trade through Buffalo and Black Rock, turning the region into one of the most important transportation hubs of the young American republic. Historically, Black Rock was originally a separate village and an important rival to Buffalo during the early 19th century. Located along the Niagara River, it served as a strategic port and military site, especially during the War of 1812. Eventually, Buffalo's superior harbor and rapid growth led to the incorporation of Black Rock into the expanding city of Buffalo. The engraving demonstrates the refined line work characteristic of steel engraving, a technique capable of producing extremely fine detail and dramatic tonal contrasts. The artist skillfully renders the movement of the waves, the rigging of the ships, and the imposing silhouette of the lighthouse against the cloudy sky. Today this print is valued both for its striking maritime imagery and for its historical depiction of early navigation and trade along the Great Lakes and Niagara River region. Condition report: Good condition for its age with light overall toning and scattered foxing mainly visible in the margins. Plate mark visible. Paper remains strong and stable. Framing tips: This engraving frames beautifully in a dark walnut, black, or ebonized frame with a wide ivory or museum-white mat. The dramatic maritime scene pairs well with classic framing and works especially well in coastal or nautical themed interiors.
