Black Storks by the Water – Elegant Antique Bird Chromolithograph c.1880 This refined late 19th-century ornithological chromolithograph depicts a pair of black storks (Ciconia nigra), shown standing at the edge of shallow water beside a low rocky outcrop. One bird is identified as an adult, while the second represents a younger specimen, allowing for a subtle comparison of posture and plumage within the species. The balanced composition and calm setting give the scene a dignified and contemplative atmosphere. The black stork, also known as the European black stork, was far less commonly seen than its white counterpart and therefore held a special fascination for 19th-century naturalists.
