About the Item

Black Storks by the Water – Elegant Antique Bird Chromolithograph c.1880 This refined late 19th-century ornithological chromolithograph depicts a pair of black storks (Ciconia nigra), shown standing at the edge of shallow water beside a low rocky outcrop. One bird is identified as an adult, while the second represents a younger specimen, allowing for a subtle comparison of posture and plumage within the species. The balanced composition and calm setting give the scene a dignified and contemplative atmosphere. The black stork, also known as the European black stork, was far less commonly seen than its white counterpart and therefore held a special fascination for 19th-century naturalists. Characterized by its dark, iridescent plumage with green and bronze tones, contrasting white underparts, and striking red bill and legs, the species was admired for its elegance and elusive nature. In this print, these defining features are rendered with great sensitivity and accuracy. Executed as a chromolithograph, the print demonstrates the strengths of the technique through smooth color layering and gentle tonal transitions. The muted blues and greens of the water and sky form a harmonious backdrop for the dark plumage of the birds, while fine detailing in the feathers and reflections in the water enhance the sense of realism. The overall palette is calm and restrained, lending the image a timeless decorative quality. This work appeals to collectors of antique bird prints and European wildlife illustration, as well as to interior designers seeking an elegant and slightly dramatic natural history image. Its vertical format and refined subject make it especially suitable for studies, hallways, libraries, or contemporary interiors inspired by nature. Condition report Good antique condition. Light foxing and mild age-related toning visible, mainly in the margins, consistent with chromolithographs of this period. The image area remains clean and well preserved, with no major tears or losses observed. Framing tips Best framed with a wide off-white or light grey mat and a simple black, dark walnut, or natural wood frame. This enhances the contrast between the dark plumage and the pale background and gives the print a classic, museum-style presentation.
