About the Item

A charming Louis XVI period print depicting the profile of a young woman wearing a red kerchief, after the painter François-André Vincent (1746–1816), one of the masters of French Neoclassicism. A student of Joseph-Marie Vien, Jacques-Louis David's rival and painter to the king, Vincent embodies the transition between the sensitive grace of the 18th century and the moral rigor of nascent Neoclassicism. Engraved by Gilles Demarteau (1722–1776), renowned for his mastery of color stippling, this work perfectly illustrates the refinement and sensitivity of 18th-century French engraving. Produced around 1770, the plate is printed in several tones on laid paper and delicately enhanced with watercolor, capturing all the softness and light of the original. The young woman, captured in profile, expresses natural beauty and restrained emotion, characteristic of the idealized female figures Vincent favored. Demarteau, through his subtle technique, successfully captures the texture of the fabrics, the complexion, and the transparency of the tones with remarkable delicacy. The work is presented in a molded and gilded wooden frame with a warm patina, which underlines the timeless charm of this composition. The work is in very good condition, with slight signs of wear consistent with its age. A true testament to the refined taste of the 18th century, this print combines the grace of Vincent's drawing and the virtuosity of Demarteau's burin, offering a piece that is both decorative and of great artistic interest to lovers of old master prints.
