About the Item

Set of Three Dutch Military Portraits – Brunswick, Van Reede, and Van Nassau, c.1750s A finely engraved set of three 18th-century copperplate portraits of high-ranking military commanders of the Dutch Republic, each within an oval frame and identified by an inscription panel below. From left to right: 1. Lodewyk, Hertog van Brunswyk-Wolfenbüttel – Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Field Marshal of the States of the United Netherlands. A distinguished German nobleman who served the Dutch Republic in a senior military capacity, noted for his strategic leadership. 2. Godard van Reede, Graaf van Athlone – Field Marshal of the United Netherlands. Godard van Reede (1644–1703) was a Dutch general who gained fame for his role in the Williamite War in Ireland and other campaigns in service of King William III. 3. Willem, Graaf van Nassau – Field Marshal of the United Netherlands. A scion of the influential Nassau family, Willem served in key military positions during the 17th century, contributing to the defence and strategic expansion of the Republic’s power. These engravings were created by master engravers of the Dutch Golden Age and the early 18th century, often for illustrated historical and biographical compendiums. The portraits are finely detailed, showing military attire, armour, and insignia, along with precise facial renderings that convey both authority and personality. Condition report: Good condition. Light, even toning and minimal foxing; strong, clean impressions with excellent detail. Framing tips: A panoramic frame with a neutral mat will suit the unified composition. A gilt or dark walnut frame will enhance their historical elegance. Technique: Copperplate engraving on laid paper Maker: Various Dutch engravers, incl Houbraken, after contemporary portraits; c.1750s
