About the Item

Ecclesiastical Grand Master of St. Michael, Protector of Divine Honor, c.1790 This exquisite hand-colored engraving illustrates the Ecclesiastical Grand Master of the Order of St. Michael, titled Protector of Divine Honor. Depicted in ornate ecclesiastical regalia, the figure is adorned with a grand blue and gold mantle, embroidered with a celestial cross motif. The vibrant red undergarment and ceremonial sash further emphasize the divine and noble role of this spiritual leader. He holds a large ceremonial cross in one hand and a gospel in the other, symbolizing his role as both a protector and a guide of faith. This engraving is part of the celebrated series "Illustrations of all spiritual and secular orders" (Abbildungen derjenigen Ritter-Orden), created by Christian Friedrich Schwan and published in Mannheim between 1779 and 1791. Each illustration in this series provides a meticulously detailed representation of the attire and symbolism of various orders across Europe. Engraved by noted artists of the time, this particular piece captures the grandeur and dignity associated with the Order of St. Michael. Christian Friedrich Schwan's publication remains an important visual record of the hierarchical and cultural fabric of 18th-century Europe. Originally issued as separate booklets, the complete series showcases the richness of historical costumes and their significance. Condition Report This engraving is in very good condition for its age, with bright colors and clean lines. Minor age-related toning and faint foxing are visible, consistent with late 18th-century prints. Edges show slight wear but are intact. Presentation Tip To complement this engraving, consider a deep blue or gold acid-free matting to echo the tones of the Grand Master’s attire. A gilded wooden frame with intricate detailing would add a fitting regal touch, making this piece a standout addition to any collection of historical prints.
