About the Item

This large framed and matted original print depicts the famous scene of An Eviction in the West of Ireland. This is an original copy of the print or illustration and is from the London Illustrated News edition of the 19th March 1881. This is your chance to acquire an original piece of Irish History from the dates when the events were Actually occurring! These are not to be confused with reprints. We will provide a “Certificate of Authenticity” with each piece sold. If you are Irish, Irish-American, Anglo-Irish or just a lover of all things historic then these prints are for you! This scene evokes powerful memories of the Great Irish Potato Famine and Irish Emigration during the 19th century. The scene was sketched and recorded by A.O’Kelly and appeared in the ILN Edition for the 19th March 1881. Many Irish Tenant Farmers were evicted from their rented cottages by Local Landlords due to their inability to pay rent or tithe to the Lord. Most Tenant Farmers rented their cottage on an average holding of no more than an ACRE, from their local Landlord. During the Great Famine, due to the complete failure of the potato crop over a few years in a row, many tenant farmers could not afford to pay their rent and forcible evictions, like the one depicted here, became commonplace. The Irish economy took generations to recover. Left with quite literally ‘nothing’, many of these people decided to make the hazardous trans-Atlantic crossing, to start a new life in the New World (America). The Artist “A.O’Kelly” has signed it on bottom left (Aloysius O’Kelly). The engraver was W.J. Palmer and his signature is on the bottom right.

Wear consistent with age and use. Overall in near MINT condition. It has been framed in a simple plain black frame with acid free matting and back board.
