About the Item

The black and white print was hand-crafted by the workshop of Jacques Renaud Bernard in 1760 circa in Paris, France. The wooden frame is a contemporary production. Jacques Renaud Bernard 1731 - 1794 (or incorrectly called Robert Bernard) was a French engraver. Specilized in the technique of engraving, Bernard is mainly famous for having supplied a significant amount of plates, at least 1,800 to the Encyclopédie by Diderot & D'Alembert starting with the fourth volume in 1754. He oversaw the printing of the plates illustrating the sciences, the arts, and the mechanical arts. This print can be considered part of the depiction of the mechanical arts; it is marked as Plate No. 1 in the top right corner. The title in French language is " Imprimerie en taille douce", translated in "Intaglio printing" The signature "Bernard Direx" and "Bernard Direxit" indicate the work of the atelier of engravers he directed for many years. The piece will be delivered with its Certificate of Authenticity.

The names of the two artists are imprinted on the print itself. Pierre Mazeline was a very prolific and refined sculptor of recognized talent, he is also the author of other statues in the gardens of Versailles as the "Apollo of Belvedere and "Europe"; he also executed the equestrian statue of Louis XIV...
