About the Item

French Louis XVI Promenade Costume Lithograph, 1792 – Published 1847 Description: A beautifully hand-colored French lithograph depicting an elegantly dressed gentleman and lady in fashionable court attire from the reign of King Louis XVI, representing the year 1792. The composition is framed by a finely engraved neoclassical architectural portal adorned with sphinxes, cherubs, classical urns, Greek key ornament, sculpted female figures, and richly detailed decorative motifs inspired by the Louis XVI style. The gentleman wears a fashionable pale blue frock coat, breeches, riding boots, and carries a tricorne hat, while the lady is dressed in a graceful pink gown with blue sash, broad-brimmed feathered hat, and elegant accessories. Their attire reflects the refined fashions worn during the final years of the Ancien Régime. Published in Paris by Rittner & Goupil, this print belongs to the celebrated Costumes du Quadrille Historique – Bals de l'Opéra series. Designed by Achille Devéria with ornamental borders by J.J. Grandville, the series was created for the famous historical costume balls held at the Paris Opéra. These hand-colored lithographs are admired for their historical costume studies, elaborate decorative engraving, and exceptional French lithographic craftsmanship. The combination of elegant costume, refined neoclassical ornament, and original hand coloring makes this an excellent decorative print for collectors of French history, costume design, theatre, opera, and European decorative arts.
