About the Item

Freshwater Fish Print: Pike, Catfish, Eel, Trout – Antique 1867 This detailed antique print depicts a variety of European freshwater fish, including pike, catfish, trout, eels, and flounders, rendered in fine hand-coloured engravings. It originates from the Atlas der Natuurlijke Geschiedenis voor scholen en huisgezinnen, adapted into Dutch by T.C. Winkler after Traugott Bromme, and published in Amsterdam by J.C. Loman in 1867. Created for educational use, this plate introduced 19th-century students to the diversity of fish species inhabiting European rivers and lakes. The labelled figures include: 1. Trout (Salmo trutta) 2. Perch (Perca fluviatilis) 3. Bleak (Alburnus alburnus) 4. Minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus) 5. Pike (Esox lucius) 6. Flying fish (Exocoetidae species) 7. Tench (Tinca tinca) 8. Stickleback (Gasterosteidae species) 9. Bitterling (Rhodeus amarus) 10. Wels catfish (Silurus glanis) 11. Bullhead (Cottus gobio) 12. Loach (Cobitis taenia) 13. Lamprey (Petromyzontidae species) 14. Burbot (Lota lota) 15. Smelt (Osmerus eperlanus) 16. Grayling (Thymallus thymallus) 17. European eel (Anguilla anguilla) 18. Brook lamprey (Lampetra planeri) 19. Flounder (Platichthys flesus) Produced using copper engraving with meticulous hand colouring, the print shows precise anatomical lines and naturalistic scale patterns, highlighting each species’ distinctive body shape and fin structure. Fish are arranged systematically in a decorative yet scientifically structured composition, reflecting 19th-century natural history presentation before photographic field guides became available. Condition summary: Good condition for its age, with slight overall toning and minor scattered foxing mainly in the margins. The paper remains strong with no tears, but one small tear at the lower border, backed with tape. The hand colouring is vivid and well-preserved. Framing tips: Frame this freshwater fish print in a black, dark wood, or walnut frame with a cream or off-white mount to enhance its detailed engraving and subtle aquatic colours. For traditional interiors, a gold frame adds antique warmth and elegance. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve its colours and prevent further toning. This antique natural history print will enrich any fish art collection, educational interior, or gallery wall with timeless scientific beauty and decorative charm.
