About the Item

Hand-Coloured Shell Engravings from Gualtieri’s Index Testarum Conchyliorum, a Pair 1742 This pair of hand-coloured engravings, Plates 30 and 31 from Niccolò Gualtieri’s Index Testarum Conchyliorum, depicts a profusion of seashells — spined murexes, whelks, cones and others — arranged in the Italianate manner against a plain ground, each shell standing on end and casting a soft shadow. Engraved by Antonio Pazzi after drawings by Giuseppe Menabuoni, the plates come from the celebrated first edition published in Florence by Giovanni Albizzini in 1742; the engravings are of that date, the hand-colouring added later. Each is presented framed and glazed. Inscriptions Each plate lettered lower left Jos. Menabuoni del. and lower right P. Ant. Pazzi sc., and numbered T.30 and T.31 respectively at the upper right. Dimensions Framed (each): Height: 25⅛ inches (63.8 cm) Width: 20 inches (50.8 cm) Provenance Earle D. Vandekar of Knightsbridge. Condition Fine, the impressions clear and the later colouring fresh; presented framed and glazed. Best assessed out of the frame for foxing or toning. Historical Context Niccolò Gualtieri (1688–1744) was physician to Cosimo III de’ Medici and later held a chair at the University of Pisa, but his abiding passion was conchology. He assembled one of the great shell cabinets of the age and devised for it a system of classification that was admired by later zoologists, among them Lamarck; the Index Testarum Conchyliorum of 1742, with its allegorical frontispiece and 110 plates, remains one of the most important early works on shells. The drawings were made by Giuseppe Menabuoni and engraved by Antonio Pazzi, and much of Gualtieri’s original collection survives in the Museum of Natural History and the Territory at the Certosa di Calci, near Pisa. Literature Nissen, Zoologische Buchillustration, no. 1736. (VM98100)
