An Address of Thanks from the Faculty to the Right Honble, Mr. Influenzy for his Kind Visit to this Country Original hand-coloured etching by James Gillray, published in London on 14 April 1803 by Hannah Humphrey, the leading print publisher of British satirical art at the turn of the nineteenth century. This political and medical caricature personifies the 1803 influenza outbreak that affected Britain: “Mr Influenzy,” wearing a Phrygian cap referring to the influence of Revolutionary France, is being absurdly and submissively thanked by a group of English physicians for his “visit” to the country. Gillray’s satire targets both the alarming spread of the epidemic and the ineffective, misguided treatments of Georgian medicine, while simultaneously mocking the political anxieties of the Napoleonic era. The forceful expressions, the theatrical staging and the abundance of visual details reflect Gillray’s sharp critique and his unmistakable comic style. The inscriptions engraved on the plate — “Js. Gillray invt. & fect” on the left, and “Pubd by H. Humphrey, 14 April 1803” on the right — confirm this as a true period impression issued during Gillray’s lifetime. The original hand colouring has been well preserved, adding to the visual impact of the work. The print has been presented in a mid-20th-century British frame with a black mount, offering a clean and elegant display ready to hang. Highly desirable among collectors of eighteenth-century political satire, this piece stands as a significant document of visual propaganda and medical history during Britain’s confrontation with Napoleonic France.
