About the Item

Large Antique Dog Poster – Shepherd and Mastiff by Briedwiser c.1880 Description: This impressive original chromolithograph poster dates to circa 1880 and was published by Carl Gerold’s Sohn in Vienna as part of a zoological teaching series. The artwork was painted by Th. Briedwiser and measures approximately 65 x 84 cm, a striking poster format ideal for display. The plate depicts two dog breeds in life-like detail: Upper image: German Shepherd Dog or similar herding breed, shown standing in a grassy pasture with sheep grazing in the background. The dog’s strong build, upright ears, and alert posture demonstrate its working and guarding heritage. Lower image: English Mastiff or similar large molosser breed, depicted with a heavy, muscular frame, drooping jowls, and a brindle coat. The dog stands on a shaded forest path, exuding power and dignity. These large educational prints were originally used in schools and universities for animal husbandry and natural history education. The lithography captures each breed’s characteristic coat textures, posture, and anatomy with artistic and scientific accuracy, emphasising their roles in European agricultural and estate life. Condition: Good condition for its age. Bright and vivid colours with only light toning to outer margins and minor handling marks expected from classroom use. The main illustrations remain clean and sharp, making this poster highly suitable for framing and decorative use. Framing tips: Due to its large size, it is best framed in a simple wooden or black frame to suit veterinary clinics, farmhouses, country interiors, and collectors of dog art. A minimal mat border can enhance the poster’s academic presentation without distracting from the artwork itself. This is an authentic antique print, not a modern reproduction, and will appeal to breeders, canine historians, or interior designers seeking genuine large-format educational artwork with heritage and aesthetic appeal.
