About the Item

A large and impressive late 19th century engraved print entitled “The Sabbath Breakers”, after the celebrated 1896 painting by J. C. Dollman. The scene depicts an early game of golf being played upon a windswept links course, with two golfers interrupted by sternly dressed observers, creating one of the most recognisable and humorous golfing images of the Victorian period. Beautifully engraved with exceptional tonal detail, the composition captures the texture of the landscape, the characterful expressions of the figures, and the period golfing attire with remarkable clarity. The title appears within the lower margin together with the explanatory inscription, while the engraving is presented behind a wide mount and housed in a substantial quarter-sawn oak frame with gilt slip and decorative moulded inner border. Combining sporting history, Victorian social commentary and decorative appeal, this is an excellent piece for a study, library, golf club or country house interior.
