About the Item

Les Pyramides de l'Égypte – Optical Print by Probst, Augsburg c.1780 This antique optical print, titled Les Pyramides de l'Égypte, offers a vivid and imaginative depiction of the pyramids of Egypt, one of the ancient Seven Wonders of the World. The scene presents a fantastical interpretation of an Egyptian landscape filled with numerous pyramidal structures, obelisks, temples, fountains, and bustling figures in colourful attire. Some pyramids emit smoke or fire, adding theatricality to the composition, while others are inscribed or adorned with gold accents, typical of the 18th-century European fascination with the Orient and classical antiquity. This is a vue d’optique, or optical print, designed to be viewed through a zograscope or similar convex lens device. These instruments created the illusion of depth and movement, enhancing the immersive effect of the print. The exaggerated perspective and reversed text at the top (“LES PYRAMIDES DE L’EGYPTE”) are key features of this genre, made for entertainment and educational purposes during the Enlightenment period. Published by Georg Balthasar Probst in Augsburg, circa 1780, this print is part of a larger body of optical views that Probst produced depicting famous cities, monuments, and exotic locations around the world. His workshop was one of the most prolific in Europe for this format, and his hand-coloured engravings remain prized for their bold palette and theatrical compositions. Condition summary: Very good condition with strong original hand-colouring. Minor age-toning and a few light spots of foxing, mostly in the margins. No major tears or repairs. Paper is strong, stable and well-preserved. Framing tips: A pale cream or soft beige mount will highlight the vibrant colours and aged paper tone. Consider a black, gold, or ebonised frame for a classical 18th-century presentation. UV-protective glass is recommended to safeguard the hand-coloured surface.
