About the Item

Lion and Lioness, Antique Big Cat Print, Victorian Natural History 1894 This powerful zoological image depicts a lion and lioness resting alertly within an open African landscape. The composition balances tension and calm: the male lion crouched and watchful, the lioness standing slightly behind, reinforcing the sense of shared vigilance and strength. The careful rendering of musculature, fur texture, and posture reflects the height of late Victorian wildlife illustration. Produced in London in 1894, this print belongs to a landmark period in British natural history publishing, when scientific accuracy was paired with highly decorative presentation. The scene combines observational realism with painterly atmosphere, making it equally appealing to collectors and interior designers. The print is sold unframed, allowing for custom framing to suit personal taste or interior requirements. This flexibility makes it particularly suitable for interior designers and collectors seeking a tailored presentation. Condition; Good antique condition. Light age toning consistent with age; faint scattered foxing, mainly in the margins. Framing tips: A dark walnut or ebonized frame with a generous ivory mat enhances the warmth and authority of the image.
