About the Item

Title: Missouri, Lake Champlain, New York, San Francisco & Cotton Harvest, Original 1879 Description: An original nineteenth-century Dutch engraving illustrating five scenes from North America, published in Haarlem in 1879 by J.M. Schalekamp and G. van den Berg. The print was issued as part of the geographical publication De Werelddeelen (The Continents), written by Jan Cornelis van den Berg and based largely upon the influential geographical work Die Erde und ihre Völker by the Austrian geographer Friedrich von Hellwald. The engraving presents a fascinating visual survey of the United States during the nineteenth century through a series of carefully rendered vignettes. Each scene highlights a different aspect of American geography, transportation, commerce, and daily life. The Missouri River is shown with a paddle-wheel steamboat, symbolizing the importance of inland waterways to westward expansion and trade. Lake Champlain appears as a peaceful landscape with vessels navigating its waters, while the harbor of New York illustrates one of the world's great maritime gateways during the age of sail and steam. Particularly interesting is the depiction of the San Francisco waterfront, which captures the rapid growth of the city following the California Gold Rush and its emergence as a major Pacific port. The final scene portrays a cotton harvest in the American South, providing a glimpse into the agricultural economy that shaped much of nineteenth-century American history. Together, the five images form a visual summary of a nation undergoing extraordinary economic and territorial development. Produced for educational purposes, engravings such as this helped European readers understand distant regions and cultures at a time when international travel remained beyond the reach of most people. The composition combines geography, transportation, industry, agriculture, and urban development within a single attractive sheet. Today, the engraving appeals to collectors of Americana, transportation history, New York, California, Mississippi and Missouri River history, cotton and agricultural history, educational prints, and nineteenth-century travel imagery. The variety of subjects makes it both historically interesting and highly decorative. This is an original nineteenth-century engraving, not a later reproduction. Sold unframed. Condition Report: Good condition consistent with age. Light age toning and occasional foxing. Minor handling wear at the sheet edges. The engraving remains clear and well-preserved. Please review all images carefully. Framing Tips: This print displays beautifully in a dark walnut, ebonized, or lightly gilded frame with an ivory museum-quality mat. The multiple vignette format makes it particularly suitable for studies, libraries, offices, and interiors focused on travel, exploration, or American history. Please note that any framed or room-view images are provided for visualization purposes only. The print is sold unframed, and framed examples may not be shown to exact scale. Technique: Engraving Maker: J.M. Schalekamp & G. van den Berg after Jan Cornelis van den Berg and Friedrich von Hellwald, Haarlem, Netherlands, 1879.
