About the Item

Napoleon at the Bivouac of Wagram – French Empire History Engraving c.1840 Description: This striking 19th-century French engraving depicts Napoleon in quiet contemplation during a night bivouac on the battlefield of Wagram. The scene is composed with strong theatrical lighting, dramatic contrasts, and a carefully balanced arrangement of figures, giving it a timeless and authoritative presence that works exceptionally well as a statement piece in both classical and modern interiors. At the center of the composition, Napoleon sits alone, illuminated by firelight, while officers and soldiers gather respectfully around him. The surrounding tents, resting troops, and distant horizon create depth and atmosphere, allowing the viewer’s eye to move naturally through the scene. The restrained monochrome palette and fine engraved lines lend the image a calm, intellectual character rather than overt decoration, making it particularly suitable for studies, libraries, offices, and refined living spaces. Historically, the scene represents the night of 5–6 July 1809, following the Battle of Wagram, one of the most decisive engagements of the Napoleonic Wars. The engraving was produced decades later as part of the Galerie Historique de Versailles, a major cultural project initiated under King Louis-Philippe to celebrate key moments in French national history. Rather than serving as a contemporary battlefield record, the image reflects the Romantic-era vision of Napoleon as a figure of leadership, resolve, and strategic genius. The composition is after a painting by Adolphe Roehn, a noted French historical painter known for his Napoleonic subjects, and was engraved by Aubert for publication by Gavard in Paris. Plates from this series were intended for collectors and institutions and are appreciated today both for their historical significance and their strong decorative qualities. While the engraving forms part of a larger cycle illustrating Napoleon’s career, it stands confidently on its own as a complete and visually compelling work. Condition: Good antique condition. Light foxing and age-related toning in the margins, consistent with age. The engraved image remains clean and well-defined. A clear plate mark is visible. Framing suggestions: Best presented with a wide off-white or light grey mat to emphasize the depth of the scene. A simple black, dark wood, or ebonized frame enhances the dramatic lighting and gives the print a refined, museum-style appearance. Technique: Steel engraving Maker: After Adolphe Roehn, engraved by Aubert, published by Gavard, France, circa 1838–1848
