The image shows a wealthy man seated indoors at a table covered with coins, jewellery, and an open ledger. Dressed in a robe and cap, he gazes upwards in contemplation, unaware of his mortality. Around him are piles of wealth, with a chest overflowing with coins and jewellery spilling onto the chequered floor, symbolising his hoarded riches. In the background, visible through an open wall, is a bustling harvest scene. Workers load sheaves of grain onto carts pulled by horses, others build a larger barn to store the abundant crop, while peasants gather and carry produce across the field. The storehouse shelves behind him are already packed with goods, underlining the futility of his constant accumulation. This visual narrative references Christ’s teaching against greed, where the rich man, planning to build bigger barns to store his goods, is told that his life will end that very night and his wealth will not save him. This engraving was produced using the copper engraving technique, prized for its fine linework and clarity.
