Title: Persian Women & Interior Lithographs, Oriental Costume, Paris c.1888 Set
A richly decorative and visually captivating set of three antique lithographs depicting Persian women, interiors, and traditional costume studies, published in Paris by Firmin-Didot & Cie in the late 19th century. These finely executed plates originate from one of the most celebrated costume publications of the period, created to document global cultures, dress, and daily life with both artistic refinement and ethnographic precision.
The first plate presents a series of Persian female figures arranged in structured panels, seated and standing, each dressed in layered garments with intricate patterns, jewelry, and head coverings. The composition emphasizes textile richness and variation in regional attire, with delicate detailing in both fabric and accessories.
The second plate offers a striking interior scene, depicting a richly ornamented Persian room with elaborate geometric wall decorations, carpets, and architectural detailing. Two female figures animate the scene—one reclining in a relaxed pose on a divan, the other standing—providing both narrative and scale within this highly decorative environment. The intricate patterns and color harmonies make this plate particularly appealing as a standalone statement piece.
The third plate returns to a structured costume study, presenting a variety of female figures in traditional dress, including veiled and unveiled representations. The figures are arranged in a balanced composition that highlights differences in attire, posture, and cultural context, reinforcing the ethnographic purpose of the work.
Executed in fine lithography with original hand coloring, these prints display vibrant yet harmonious tones, with careful attention to detail in garments, interiors, and ornamentation. The combination of figural studies and interior depiction creates a versatile and visually engaging set, suitable for both decorative and collector-oriented use.
Condition: Good antique condition with age-related toning, light foxing, and minor edge wear consistent with age. Some irregularities along the top margins from the original binding. Colors remain strong and fresh. No major damage. Plate marks not applicable due to lithographic process.
Framing tips: These prints display beautifully with wide ivory or warm off-white mats and thin dark walnut or black frames. As a set of three, they work well in a horizontal arrangement or as a slightly staggered gallery wall. The interior scene can also be used as a central focal piece with the costume plates flanking it.
Note: The interior mockups are for visual inspiration only and do not represent the exact scale. We do not sell reproductions, only original works of art over 100 years old.
