About the Item

A set of three hand-colored etchings by Austrian artist and etchmaker Josef Eidenberger (1899–1991). Each etching depicts a iconic structure of Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, specifically the Wren Building, the Governor's Palace, and Carter's Grove Plantation. The Wren Building, located at the College of William & Mary, is the oldest college building in continuous use in the U.S, and is depicted with a red brick façade, elegant windows, a large tree, spring foliage, and two figures in colonial dress. The Williamsburg Governor's Palace is depicted vertically with a distinct roof and lookout, flanking buildings, large trees, and a mounted horse rider. The Georgian-style brick manor of Carter's Grove Plantation is shown with flanking wings, green shuttered windows, a horse, and two figures beneath large trees. The etchings combine fine intaglio linework with delicate hand-applied watercolor washes, rendered in the loose, atmospheric style characteristic of Eidenberger's European architectural etchings, here imposed upon American Colonial subjects. Eidenberger was commissioned in 1973, in commemoration of the American Bicentennial, to produce a series of etchings of scenes around the United States. Each work is pencil-signed by the artist and inscribed with a dedication dated April 1977. Each is presented in a carved giltwood frame with acanthus corner ornaments and black backing paper. The two horizontal etchings measure 28.5" wide and 26.5 tall, while the vertical etching measures 26.5" wide and 29.5" tall. Sold as a set of three. From an estate in Napa, CA.

    Wear consistent with age and use. Beautifully crafted with fine etching and detailed linework. Good condition with minor age-appropriate wear, including light toning to paper, scattered marks and nicks to frames, and a tear to back dust cover.
