About the Item

Set of 8 Antique Botanical Prints – Poa Grasses incl. Meadowgrass & Bluegrass (c.1830) This rare set of eight hand-colored botanical engravings from circa 1830 showcases various species from the *Poa* genus—commonly known as meadowgrass or bluegrass. Each plate presents the plant in exquisite detail, combining precise botanical accuracy with early 19th-century artistic charm. Among the depicted species are: * *Poa trivialis* (Rough Meadow Grass) * *Poa pratensis* (Kentucky Bluegrass) * *Poa compressa* (Canada Bluegrass) * *Poa rigida* (Rigid Meadowgrass) * *Poa angustifolia* (Narrow-Leaved Bluegrass) * *Poa alpina* (Alpine Meadowgrass) * *Poa laxa* (Loose Meadowgrass) * *Poa bulbosa* (Bulbous Meadowgrass) Each engraving includes fine structural linework with hand-colored elements added to emphasize the leaves, stems, and florets. Inset botanical illustrations in the margins display key plant features, such as flower parts and root systems. These plates were likely part of an early 19th-century botanical series aimed at both academic study and horticultural appreciation. Their elegant aesthetic, paired with scientific value, makes them highly collectible and ideal for display in botanical, natural history, or country-style interiors. Whether showcased individually or together as a gallery wall, this set brings a timeless and refined naturalist beauty to any space. Condition report: Very good condition for age. Light overall toning and scattered foxing, mostly in margins. Visible plate marks. Minor handling wear and a few corner creases consistent with age. Hand-coloring still vibrant. Framing tips: These plates would look striking when float-mounted in ivory or pale cream double mats with slim oak, walnut, or black wood frames. Grouped in two rows of four or a grid of four by two enhances their botanical impact. Consider museum glass to preserve detail and reduce glare. Technique: Engraving with original hand-coloring Maker: Anonymous, likely British or French school, c.1830
