About the Item

Set of Three English Historical Prints After Samuel Wale, Walnut Frames, circa 1930 An elegant and highly decorative set of three English historical prints, dating to circa 1930, based on 18th-century engravings originally published in Russell’s New and Authentic History of England. The original compositions were drawn by Samuel Wale (1720–1786), an important English historical painter and book illustrator, and depict episodes from English and European history. The engravings formed part of a larger series of fourteen historical illustrations. Each print is presented with a light-colored passe-partout and glazed in an elegant walnut wood frame. The warm tone of the walnut beautifully complements the monochromatic prints and their naturally aged appearance. Displayed together, the three works form a sophisticated and harmonious wall arrangement, particularly suited to a library, study, living room, hallway or Modern Classic interior. The three scenes represented are: 1. Prince Henry Taking the Crown from the Pillow of His Dying Father, King Henry IV The composition depicts Prince Henry taking the Crown from the pillow of his dying father, King Henry IV. The original drawing was created by Samuel Wale (1720–1786) and the engraving was executed by William Walker (1729–1793) for Russell’s New and Authentic History of England. 2. The Orphan House at Hell in Hanover Set on Fire by Order of the Duke de Richelieu A dramatic historical scene depicting the Orphan House at Hell in Hanover in flames, set on fire by order of the Duke de Richelieu. The original composition was drawn by Samuel Wale (1720–1786) and engraved by Charles Taylor (1756–1828). 3. Edward, Prince of Wales, Seized by the Duke of Clarence and Others on a Signal Being Given by Edward IV This historical composition depicts Edward, Prince of Wales, being seized by the Duke of Clarence and others following a signal given by Edward IV. The original drawing was created by Samuel Wale (1720–1786) and the engraving was executed by Debroche. The finely detailed monochromatic compositions, elaborate architectural borders and historical subject matter give the group a distinctly classical character. Their restrained palette makes them particularly versatile: while rooted in traditional English design, they also provide an elegant historical accent in contemporary and Modern Classic interiors. The prints are circa 1930 examples based on the original 18th-century engravings and should not be confused with the original 18th-century impressions.
