About the Item

Pair of Engravings with Roman views, of the Circus of Caracalla and the Circus Maximus - Marco Sadeler (1606) - from "Vestiges of the Antiquities of Rome." The author points out that the name Maximus derives purely from the monumental size of the structure, which far exceeded other Roman circuses, a place designated for games and hunts. The work highlights the "signs" of the table: The bleachers for the people, The carceres, or starting gates for the chariots, the underground streets, the broken obelisk (the Flaminian Obelisk or to the Obelisk of Constantius II, which were found broken before being moved by the popes (to Piazza del Popolo and St. John Lateran, respectively). Acqua Crabra, a stream, and the Valley Hills between the Aventine and Palatine are also mentioned. The view of the Circus of Caracalla (Circus of Maxentius), located near the Appian Way and the Church of St. Sebastian, depicts the remains of the ancient place used for festivals and games, accurately measuring its historical dimensions (223 rods long). These rare burin engravings are taken from the famous series "Vestigi delle Antichità di Roma, Tivoli, Pozzuolo et altri luoghi," published in Prague in 1606 by Sadeler.
