About the Item

An exceptional and rare 16th century Venetian textile, richly embroidered with 1.2 kilograms of gold metallic thread on deep red silk velvet. This beautifully preserved fabric exemplifies the grandeur and artistry of Renaissance Venice, long celebrated for its luxurious textile production and refined decorative arts. The design features elaborate scrolling foliage and grapevine motifs, masterfully worked in couched gold thread. At its center sits a finely embroidered coat of arms within an ornate cartouche, indicating noble or ecclesiastical origins. This coat of arms represents the tree of life with two wolfs and a fountain of youth. This outstanding piece likely once adorned a ceremonial interior—possibly used as a valance, border for an altar frontal, or part of a larger furnishing in a grand palazzo. The background velvet remains vibrant, with the embroidery retaining a rich metallic sheen. The textile is finished with a period-appropriate fringe, enhancing its visual elegance. Its sophisticated detailing and striking composition make it a rare surviving example of 16th century Venetian textile craftsmanship. The condition is excellent for its age, with embroidery and materials largely intact and well-preserved. This piece would make a powerful statement when mounted or framed, and is ideal for collectors of Renaissance artifacts, antique textiles, or Italian decorative arts.
