About the Item

Bring depth and soft color to your interior with this exquisite woven artwork from Aubusson, France, circa 1760. This rectangular tapestry depicts a serene young maiden holding a torch amidst lush verdure and foliage in varying tones of green, beige, and gold. The scene exemplifies the refined pastoral style typical of 18th-century Aubusson weaving. The textile is set within its original carved and painted frame, adorned with hand-painted green leaf motifs and remnants of its aged polychrome finish. Rich in texture and history, the wall hanging is in good condition commensurate with age and use, displaying minor wear consistent with its centuries-old origin. A charming addition to a bedroom, hallway, or study. Aubusson, a historic town on the river Creuse in central France, became one of Europe’s premier tapestry centers during the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV. Known for its intricate “low-warp” weaving technique, Aubusson workshops produced masterpieces of depth and realism that adorned aristocratic homes across France. Measures: 69.5" W x 2.5" D x 28" H
