About the Item

An impressive antique Indian zardozi patchwork textile hanging, probably Rajasthan or Gujarat, assembled from richly worked ceremonial, sari, or garment textile fragments and mounted with a wool backing. The large-scale composition is arranged as a formal decorative panel, with a central medallion and intersecting geometric bands surrounded by borders of paisley boteh, floral vines, arabesques, and jewel-like appliqué. The surface is densely embroidered with metallic zari and zardozi-style couching, sequins, beads, faux pearlwork, colored silk and velvet fragments, and raised ornamental passages that catch the light with exceptional depth and texture. The palette of muted rose, plum, gold, green, and silver gives the textile an aged and courtly character, while the varied panels suggest the reuse of older embroidered fragments associated with Indian ceremonial dress, wedding textiles, and palace furnishing traditions. The work belongs to the broader tradition of Indian luxury embroidery, in which metallic thread, beadwork, spangles, and applied ornament were used to create textiles of architectural richness and ceremonial presence. Its patchwork construction is particularly evocative of Rajasthani and Gujarati textile assemblages, where fragments of brocade, zardozi, and embellished dress fabrics were preserved and recomposed into decorative hangings. The result is not merely a textile panel, but a layered object of material history: part wall hanging, part embroidered collage, and part record of regional Indian craftsmanship. With its dense metallic embroidery, paisley borders, floral arabesques, jewel-toned appliqué, sequined highlights, and substantial wool backing, this piece would serve as a striking decorative tapestry, textile artwork, or Indian palace-style wall hanging.
