About the Item

“Le Déjeuner” (meaning: Lunch), created by René Fumeron (1921-2004) wall tapestry of 194cm x 135 cm, stretched over a wooden frame. René Fumeron (1921–2004) was a celebrated French painter and tapestry designer closely associated with the postwar revival of Aubusson tapestry. A prolific artist, he created more than 500 tapestry cartoons throughout his career and collaborated extensively with the renowned Pinton workshops as well as the Aubusson and Gobelins manufactories. His work evolved from figurative compositions influenced by Jean Lurçat toward a more abstract visual language during the 1960s, before returning to richly colored poetic scenes inspired by nature and everyday life. “Le Déjeuner” is an exceptional example of Fumeron’s refined decorative vocabulary and mastery of narrative composition. Woven in the Aubusson tradition, the tapestry captures a serene déjeuner scene rendered in warm tonal harmonies and expressive forms characteristic of the artist’s mature period. The composition balances modernist stylization with a distinctly French sense of intimacy and atmosphere, making the work both visually striking and highly decorative. Fumeron’s tapestries are increasingly sought after by collectors for their artistic quality, sophisticated color palettes, and historical importance within twentieth-century French textile art. His works were exhibited internationally and commissioned for prestigious interiors, including decorative projects for the legendary ocean liner France. A rare and important decorative textile, “Le Déjeuner” embodies the elegance and craftsmanship of the great Aubusson weaving tradition while reflecting the modern artistic sensibility that defined René Fumeron’s oeuvre.
