About the Item

René Fumeron's "Samouraï" — a mid-century French wall tapestry, screen-printed on woven wool, in which a molten orange sun rises through a flurry of black, gold, and chartreuse strokes like a scatter of blades. René Fumeron (1921–2004) trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and became one of the defining imagiers of the postwar French tapestry revival, working in the bold graphic idiom that Jean Lurçat had opened up. Samouraï is among his best-known compositions, issued as a limited edition — hand-printed onto a woven wool ground by the Aubusson atelier Robert Four. The title unlocks the image: the disc a rising sun, the slashing line-work - a suggestion of blades and armor. Abstraction you can read. The palette is grounded and moody — olive, moss, russet, and smoke-brown — cut by that single insistent orange and lifted with threads of acid green and cream. Signed R. Fumeron in the print, lower right; the reverse carries a hand-written inventory mark, 3257. Its long horizontal format is made for a modern interior — above a low sofa, a credenza, or a bed, where it reads as one confident graphic gesture. For anyone building a serious mid-century interior, this is a cornerstone piece: a signed, documented edition by a named French artist, exactly the kind of work MCM collectors look for and rarely find in this untouched condition. In very good vintage condition. The colors are strong and unfaded — the piece has deliberately been left uncleaned to preserve them. No holes, no tears, no repairs, no maker's label (see photos).
