About the Item

Executed in gobelin technique in wool and cotton, the field depicting a stylised enchanted forest through which deer move among slender elongated tree trunks, birds animating the upper register above a dense ornamental floor of flowers and zigzagging foliage, the whole within a foliate border; the lower register bearing a woven inscription quoting verses from the medieval Nordic ballad Jomfruen i fugleham (‘The Maiden in Bird Form’). The muted palette of blues, greens, ochres, and soft reds lends the composition a subdued, dreamlike atmosphere in which folk narrative and early twentieth-century design ideals merge in a vision of transformation. Signed by the weaver. Designed by Alf Lundeby (1870–1961), originally trained as a woodcarver and active across painting, textile design, wallpaper, and decorative arts. In 1909 Lundeby studied under Henri Matisse in Paris, an experience that informed his sensitivity to colour and surface. The tapestry was woven by Ragnhild Prestgard (1880–1960), a professional textile artist who ran her own weaving school and produced tapestries for leading workshops, spinning and dyeing her yarns using plant-based dyes. Their collaboration reflects the characteristic early twentieth-century division of artistic labour, in which compositional design and highly skilled execution were recognised as equally essential contributions to the finished work. Exhibited at the Norwegian Jubilee Exhibition, 1914. A closely related version, differing only in the addition of side fringes, is held in the permanent collection of Nasjonalmuseet, Oslo.
