About the Item

A pair of large-sized South Indian (Kerala) wooden boat steering paddles from the mid-20th century. This pair of hand-carved boat oars from Kerala are an impressive 11+ feet in length. The paddles have as a beautiful salt water patina and lovely show of use and history, especially about the tips of their blades. These large sized paddles would have once been used in the rear, steering the boats of the Kerala, including the 100 ft long snake boats, or 'chundanvallams' as they are locally known. These mid-century Kerala boat oars, which once elegantly traversed the waters of South India, would look fantastic hanging on a wall, or even standing upright in a corner. We have included an additional image of the paddles being hung in our warehouse, so you may get a better idea of their wonderful size and scale.
