About the Item

Pair of 19th Century Grand Tour Classical Relief Plaques in Patinated Cast Iron An elegant and highly decorative pair of 19th-century Grand Tour relief plaques, finely cast in iron and retaining a rich, dark patinated surface. Each oval plaque depicts a different classical allegorical scene in raised relief, with figures in antique dress set within idyllic landscapes. One composition shows a seated female figure accompanied by animals beneath trees, while the other depicts a reclining female figure with a winged putto, surrounded by classical architectural and landscape elements. The detailed figurative scenes are framed by handsome molded oval borders with a continuous beaded decoration, giving the plaques a refined Neoclassical character. Their dark patination beautifully emphasizes the modeling and depth of the relief work. Produced during the 19th century in the spirit of the Grand Tour, when classical antiquity and the art of Italy and the ancient world provided an important source of inspiration for European collectors and travelers. Decorative reliefs of this type were intended to bring the aesthetic of classical sculpture and antiquity into the domestic interior. Both plaques retain suspension loops at the top and are ready for wall display. Presented together, they form a particularly attractive pair and would work beautifully in both traditional and contemporary interiors. Sold as a pair. Good antique condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor surface wear, rubbing, scratches, small marks and variations to the dark patinated finish, all consistent with their 19th-century age and adding to their authentic character.
